Q-Switch Nd:YAG Laser Target Areas and Specific Concerns

The Q-switch Nd:YAG Laser is a versatile laser technology designed to address different skin concerns. This technique utilises different wavelengths of laser energy to penetrate the skin layers and disintegrate pigment and ink.

Here’s how the Q-switch laser works for different issues you may be dealing with:

  • Pigmentation. The laser light targets and breaks down skin pigments, whether you’re dealing with sun spots, age spots, or melasma.
  • Tattoo removal. The laser works by breaking down ink particles under the skin, which are then gradually cleared by your body.
  • Hyperpigmented acne marks. By breaking down melanin, the laser reduces the appearance of hyperpigmented acne marks, helping to achieve an even skin tone over time.

The Q-switch Nd:YAG Laser can be used in different areas of the body, such as the:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Hands
  • Arms

Consultation

A thorough consultation is important to tailor the treatment according to your goals, skin tone and skin type. This initial step aims to give you as much information as possible about the procedure and address your concerns.

During this session, our doctor will conduct a detailed skin evaluation, taking into account your concerns and any previous treatments you might have had. Based on this evaluation, a tailored treatment plan will be developed, ensuring the approach aligns with your specific needs.

Is Q-Switch Nd:YAG laser safe? Q-Switched lasers are generally regarded as safe when administered by a qualified doctor.

Is the Q-switch Nd:YAG laser suitable for all skin types? The Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser is generally suitable for various skin types, including individuals with darker skin tones, because of its ability to selectively target pigment without causing damage to surrounding tissues. However, individual assessments are essential to determine your suitability for the treatment.

Treatment Procedure

The treatment itself involves the following steps:

  1. Cleaning the area. The target area is cleansed to prepare for the laser application.
  2. Numbing Cream Application. A topical numbing cream or local anaesthetic may be applied to the treatment area to minimise discomfort during the procedure. This is especially common for tattoo removal or sensitive areas.
  3. Laser application. The Q-Switch Nd:YAG Laser is used in the treatment area. The process may take a few minutes, depending on the size of the tattoo or pigmentation.
  4. Post procedure. If the procedure is done on the face, a moisturiser and sunscreen will be applied. If done for tattoo removal, an anti-inflammatory cream will be given, and it will be applied for a few days.

Is Q-switch Nd:YAG Laser effective? This laser technology is commonly used to address concerns like tattoo removal and pigmentation issues. However, results may vary depending on individual cases and treatment plans.

Post-Treatment Care

Proper aftercare is crucial for maximising results and minimising any potential side effects. Here are some handy aftercare tips:

  • Use Sun Protection. Protect your skin from direct sunlight by regularly using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF. This is to prevent further pigmentation changes and protect your skin.
  • Use prescribed products. Follow your doctor’s recommendations for any topical products, such as healing ointments or skin-lightening creams, to aid recovery and enhance results.
  • Keep the area clean. Gently cleanse the treated area with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh scrubs or exfoliants during the healing process.
  • Moisturise. Apply a gentle moisturiser to keep the skin hydrated and promote healing.
  • Avoid makeup in the meantime. Depending on the type of treatment done, sometimes we might need to refrain from applying makeup for at least 24-48 hours post-treatment.
  • Cold compress. If there is swelling or discomfort, applying a cold compress may help soothe the treated area.
  • Do not pick or scratch. Allow any scabs or peeling skin to fall off naturally to prevent scarring or infection.

Typical Side Effects and Management

  • Redness and swelling. Mild swelling and redness are common and usually subside before leaving the clinic.
  • Scabbing. Scabs may form as the skin heals. Avoid picking at them; they should heal naturally.
  • Skin hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Some patients may experience changes in skin pigmentation. Using high-SPF sunscreen regularly and following up with your doctor can help manage these effects.
  • Itching or discomfort. Mild itching can occur in individuals with very dry skin. Topical moisturisers and anti-inflammatory creams can help hydrate the skin, alleviating this symptom.

Is there downtime after the treatment?

There is little to no downtime associated with Q-Switch laser treatment. Patients may experience redness and swelling, but it is generally safe and well-tolerated, and most individuals can resume activities shortly after the procedure.

How often should the treatment be done?

The frequency of Q-switched laser treatments depends on the specific condition being addressed. Generally, skin pigmentation (sun spots, solar keratosis, melasma, etc.) requires 3 to 10 sessions, depending on the severity and type of pigmentation. It is often spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. For tattoo removal, sessions are often spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, with an average of 6 to 10 sessions, depending on some factors (tattoo size, ink density, age of tattoo, skin type and location.

How long do the results last?

The results vary depending on the condition being treated and individual skin characteristics. Generally, improvements from the Q-switched laser treatment can last for years if the skin is properly taken care of. Proper skin protection, skincare routine, and maintenance treatment  (typically every 4 to 6 months) help maintain the results.

Q-Switch Nd:YAG Laser Machine

The Q-Switch machine emits high-intensity pulses that are absorbed by chromophores in the skin, like melanin and haemoglobin. This selective photothermolysis enables the laser beam to reduce the visibility of pigmentation, vascular lesions, scars and tattoos.

At Lux Medical Aesthetic Clinic, we use a specific model with settings which we can adjust to accommodate different concerns and treatment areas. These features allow our practitioner to precisely target pigmentation, tattoos and pigmented acne marks.

Why Choose Lux Medical Aesthetic Clinic?

At Lux Medical Aesthetic Clinic, patient safety and comfort are our focus, with treatments designed to align with individual needs and care standards.
